Strange But True

CAIRO JULY 2000: Someone overheard a conversation at the Marriot in which it was apparently claimed that a Consul of one European embassy has been inviting young egyptian men to parties and asking them to cover themselves with chocolate. If you receive an invitation we don't know whether you should take "Nutella" or any other brand. We should also make it clear that there was no suggestion or implication that visas might be more easily attained by attending the party.

LUXOR LATE 2000: Almost no one in Luxor has ever seen a transvestite. Most have never even heard of transvestites. But now senior member of staff at a Luxor hotel has been allegedly arrested for appearing in women's clothes on the internet even though he was never in fact involved in any transvestism. Apparently a woman tourist friend of his used a perfectly innocent photograph of him and then used the computer to generate a picture of him in drag and posted it on the net. What started as a bit of stupid fun without the poor man's knowledge now seems to have resulted in the loss of his job and him being detained by police.

EGYPT 2001: Customs officials were gravely embarassed when it was discovered that a stash of some two million viagara pills confiscated from smugglers had gone missing. Since its' introduction in 1998 Viagara has never received a license for sale in Egypt. The pills stored in the warehouse had an estimated street value of atleast ten million dollars. But reporters seemed happy with the conclusion that the pills had been devoured by hungry mice !
